*** It’s a great weekend for skiing and snowboarding. See you there! ***

UPDATE #7: The email with my cell no. and room no. (2154A Burnt Mountain Road) has been sent to the yes RSVPs. If you do not see my email, check your spam folder, and also make sure your email and Meetup settings allow for you to always receive messages from the organizer. If it’s not there, send me a message through my Meetup profile with your cell no. so I can text you back. See you there!

UPDATE #6: I will send out an email Friday morning of the trip with my cell no. and my room no. for you to meet me. Please make sure your email and Meetup notification settings allow for you to always receive messages from the organizer. I’ll be there at 4pm, and I will give everyone their lift ticket passes, rental forms, room keys, and any lesson tickets. You will also need to do a pre-trip walkthrough of your unit and fill out a form with any damages. Just a reminder, please first go to Check-in Center (no. 40 on this map) to get directions to your unit. Then you’ll come to my room (TBA) from 4pm – midnight so that I can give you your keys, lift tickets, rental forms, lesson tickets, specific-colored ribbon to tie to the back of your helmet or hat (so we can all identify each other on the slopes), etc. Rooms will be ready for checkin at 4pm (see the “Friday Itinerary” section of the trip posting for full details). If you are running late, please TEXT me. This UPDATE has also been emailed to the YES RSVPs. See you there!

UPDATE #5: Just a friendly reminder, for those that have signed up and made payment for the trip, if you have not already submitted your attendee information (see the “Attendee Information” section of the event posting), please send that to me through my Meetup profile (do NOT comment on the event posting) as soon as you can. If you do not provide a response by Mon. Feb. 4th, answers will be provided for you. This UPDATE has been emailed to the yes RSVPs. Thank you!

UPDATE #4: The early-bird price has ended and the regular ticket price is now in effect. There are only 5 spots left, so get them while you can. If you RSVP’d yes, but have not made payment, you are not included in this trip. Please make payment to secure your spot. See you there!

UPDATE #3: The early-bird pricing ends on Sun. Jan. 20th and there are only 5 spots left. Make payment to lock in your spot. I hope to see you there!

UPDATE #2: The “early early-bird” price has ended and the “early bird” ticket price is now in effect. Looking forward to seeing you there!

UPDATE #1: There are fewer than 7 “early early-bird” spots left and the price will increase when the “early early-bird” spots are gone or by Sun. Dec. 30th (whichever comes first). To be fair to those who want to join in and are ready to make payment, I’ll be removing those that haven’t paid by Sun. Dec. 16th, then every Monday after that, then every day the final week. Make payment to *truly* lock in your spot (see the “Trip Options” and “Payment” sections of the event posting). If you’ve already made payment, the PayPal email you received is confirmation that we’ve received your payment (no need to message me asking for ticket confirmation). This UPDATE has been emailed to the yes RSVPs. I hope to see you there!

Let’s get together for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding!

Skiing and snowboarding in the Mid-Atlantic has been hit-or-miss lately. For the same total travel time (for good slopes), let’s take a trip north for the best skiing and snowboarding on the east coast! I’ve made special arrangements for our group for a full weekend of skiing / snowboarding at Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Maine. With a 4.7 rating on Google Reviews, it is the second largest ski resort (skiable area) east of the Mississippi and snow-making percentage (95%). It has the 2nd longest vertical drop in New England of 2,820 feet (~twice that of the longest in the Mid-Atlantic). It is also Maine’s 2nd highest peak at 4,237 feet and offers the only lift-serviced above-treeline skiing and snowboarding in the east. With a winter ski and snowboard season that starts in November and goes until May, February is the peak time to visit.

Lift tickets, equipment rental, and lodging at Sugarloaf are less expensive than good resorts in the Mid-Atlantic and flights are quick and reasonably priced (see the “Flights & Airport Transfer” section for full details). Our ski and snowboard trip last year was a blast!

LODGING

I’ve reserved for us a block of 5 bedroom, 2 or 3 bath condos at Mountainside condos located on the east side of the resort. These quintessential Sugarloaf properties are a perennial favorite for those looking for direct ski-in / ski-out access or for a quick shuttle ride to the Village. Mountainside condominiums offer cozy accommodations nestled along the Buckboard and Stub’s Glade trails with easy access to the Whiffletree chairlift.

(Mountainside condo*)

Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen that includes coffee maker, toaster, microwave, range, and refrigerator; woodstove or fireplace; cable TV and DVD player; complimentary use of the Sugarloaf Sports & Fitness Center (with indoor / outdoor hot tubs!); ski locker and deck; free shuttle service throughout the resort; and free parking! Rooms are ready for checkin at 4pm.

(Mountainside condo living area*)

Note we will attempt to assign same sex to one condo unit where possible. There may be instances where some condo units will be co-ed due to imbalance in gender signups. Each bedroom within each condo unit will be the same sex, unless you are a couple.

FRIDAY ITINERARY

We’ll check-in Friday. Go to the Check-in Center (no. If you arrive at the resort after midnight, please go to Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel (5092 Access Rd, Carrabassett Valley, ME) to get your condo unit key, and meet me at Narrow Gauge Cafe (no. 13 on this map) for breakfast Saturday morning at 9am… I’ll give you everything you need then). When you arrive, feel free to go enjoy the shops, restaurants, Sport & Fitness Center, Anti-Gravity Complex, or the awesome hot tubs (they close at 7pm) on our own! Each condo includes a few free parking spots right at the unit. Free overflow parking is also available (lots E and F on this map).

(Group dinner)

If you wish to arrive early on Friday to get an early jump on skiing / snowboarding, please let me know your ETA. I’ll give the Check-in Center a heads up, so that they can give you everything you need to go down the slopes. You can park in one of the day parking lots (lots C, D, E, F on this map) and go to the Base Lodge (no. 19 on this map) to suit up. Rooms are ready for checkin at 4pm.

(Pre-bar gathering)

SATURDAY ITINERARY

Saturday morning at 9am, we’ll get together for breakfast at Narrow Gauge Cafe (no. 13 on this map). All meal costs are on our own. If you wish to get an earlier jump on the day, by all means, please do (lifts open at 8:30am). If you rented equipment, please take your rental form to the Ski & Snowboard Rental Shop (no. 16 on this map) to pick up your equipment. If you signed up for group lessons, you’ll meet at the Adult Perfect Turn Hut (no. 1 on this map) located above the Base Lodge at 10:30am or 1:15pm. If you signed up for the beginner package, you’ll meet at the Ski & Snowboard Rental Shop (no. 16 on this map) located on the top floor of the Base Lodge at 10:30am or 1:15pm.

  • At 1pm, I’d like to do a group photo right outside the Base Lodge (no. 19 on this map) at the flagpoles with our ski / snowboard gear on.
  • At 5pm, let’s go to the hot tub at the Sports & Fitness Center (no. 37 on this map) for a nice steaming soak after a fun day of skiing and snowboarding!
  • At 7pm, if you’d like to join us for dinner, let’s meet at Sports & Fitness Cafe (no. 51 on this map)
  • At 9:30pm, we’ll meet at my condo unit (TBA) for some pre-game activity before heading out at 10:30pm to The Rack for a night of music, drinks, mingling, and fun (there may be a $5 – 10 cover charge depending on if a popular band / DJ is performing). The Rack features a full bar, live entertainment, and is co-owned by two-time Olympic gold medalist, Seth Wescott!

SUNDAY ITINERARY

Sunday morning we’ll do it all over again at Narrow Gauge Cafe at 9am! Again, if you wish to get an earlier jump on the day, by all means, please do (lifts open at 8:30am). Check out time is 11am, so be sure to return your keys to the “Check-in Center” (no. 40 on this map), and put your bags in your cars before you hit the slopes.

CARPOOLING

If you’d like to carpool with others from the airport, I suggest posting in the comment box. Likewise, if you secured a rental car and can offer a ride, please also post in the comment box with number of people you can accommodate and at what time.

FLIGHTS & AIRPORT TRANSFER

When buying your air ticket, make sure it arrives on Fri. Feb. 8th and departs on Sun. Feb. 10th. I typically use Momondo to search for flights and rental cars with success. Also, please see here for recommendations on when best to buy your airplane ticket… https://cnb.cx/AG1h3h. Note that I have had mixed results following these general rules of thumb in the past.

The following are the closest airports to the ski resort: (1) Portland International Jetport (airport code PWM) located in Portland, Maine. It’s a ~1.5 hour nonstop flight from DC and costs ~$200 – $250 (as of the time that I posted and announced this event). To get to the ski resort from the airport, rental car companies available include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National. Cost is ~$50 per day; travel time is ~2.5 hours (~120 miles). (2) Boston – Logan International Airport (airport code BOS) located in Boston, Massachusetts. It’s a ~1.5 hour nonstop flight from DC and costs ~$100 – $150 (as of the time that I posted and announced this event). To get to the ski resort from the airport, rental cars companies available include Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, E-Z Rent-a-Car, Hertz, National, Payless, Thrifty, and Zipcar. Cost is ~$50 per day; travel time is ~4 hours (~220 miles). (3) Bangor International Airport (airport code BGR) located in Bangor, Maine. It’s a ~2 hour nonstop flight from DC and costs ~$200 – $250 (as of the time that I posted and announced this event). To get to the ski resort from the airport, rental cars companies available include Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Hertz. Cost is ~$40 per day; travel time is ~2 hours (~100 miles).

PAYMENT

PayPal account not required. Please follow the steps below (if payment by smartphone doesn’t work, please try your computer). Your RSVP is not guaranteed without payment, and your email receipt is confirmation that we have received your payment (please check your spam folder and email settings). You can also log into your PayPal or credit card account online to verify payment. Payment at the door will be permitted only should the event not sell out. Our events do sell out, so I recommend you secure your spot online early. If you make payment for less than the current ticketed price displayed without prior correspondence, your RSVP will be removed.

  1. Select “Yes” (checkmark)
  2. Enter the number of guests coming and click “Finish Payment on PayPal”
  3. Verify correct dollar amount for number of people you’re paying for. Modify if appropriate, click “Pay Now” (or “Pay Online Now” button at the top of the event posting)
  4. If you don’t have a PayPal account, enter your payment information
  5. If you have a PayPal account, simply log in, and pay as you normally would via PayPal

EVENT CHECK-IN

I will have a master list of all those that have paid. It’s not required, but I recommend printing out your payment confirmation email as a backup (if you are not on the list, you will be required to show it). When you check-in, your RSVP will be listed under the name of the PayPal or credit card account used to make payment. Typically, this is your LEGAL name as shown on your driver’s license. Sometimes, it may be under a company name if you set up your PayPal or credit card account that way. If you are not sure what it is, please log into your PayPal account (it will say “Welcome, [your account name]” at the top) or your credit card account to find out. If you are RSVP’d under someone else’s payment, please use that name for check-in.

REFUND POLICY

Since this event is paid for in advance, all sales are final unless the event is canceled or rescheduled. If the event is canceled or rescheduled, an UPDATE will be posted at the top of the event posting, and the UPDATE will also be sent as an email to the yes RSVPs. A full refund will be submitted no later than Wednesday of the following week. For rescheduled events, you must let me know within 3 calendar days of the UPDATE email if you are unable to make the new date… no refunds will be given after that time. Send me a message via my Meetup profile (do NOT comment on the event posting). Thanks for understanding. =)

TICKET RESELL / TRANSFER

Similar to a concert ticket or a football game ticket, you are free to sell / transfer your ticket to someone else (same sex only if individual spot; if a couple spot, only to another couple or to 2 people of the same sex) if you are unable to attend. I suggest posting in the comment box for the event, that you have a ticket for sale / transfer. Work out any payment between yourselves, and have the seller only send me (the organizer) a message through my Meetup profile (do not comment in the comment box of the event posting) letting me know the first AND last name, and Meetup profile link (if a member) of the person taking your spot (please also copy them on the message). To obtain their Meetup profile link, go to their profile from the mobile website or your computer (not the app), and copy & paste the link from your browser. I host a lot of events and groups, so please let me know the event name and group name the ticket transfer is for. You must let me know by the RSVP close time of 9am on the day of the event.

EVENT CREDIT

If you are unable to attend an event, unfortunately a credit towards another event is not possible. Many credit requests are made, and it’d be nearly impossible to track which person has how much credit left from what event to be applied towards which upcoming event or events. It’s especially challenging since the ticket price for most of our events vary. You are free to resell or transfer your ticket to someone else (see the “Ticket Resell / Transfer” section for full details).

SPECIAL NEEDS

If you have any special needs (e.g. wheelchair, dietary for events with food included, etc.), let me know in advance (a week or more before the event) and I will do my best to accommodate (message me through my Meetup profile, do NOT comment on the event posting). If you let me know the day of the event, I cannot guarantee that I will be able to help. Thank you for understanding and I appreciate the courtesy of a heads up!
